Training: Introduction to Agile Software Development

On Thursday 18 November 2004, the day before XP Day Benelux 2004, Agile Systems will organise an introductory course to Agile Software Development in Mechelen (Belgium).

Agile Software Development lets organisations deliver valuable software early. An increasing number of organisations is using or exploring Agile approaches to software and business development.

Objectives

After this one-day course participants will have a understanding of several agile methodologies, sufficient to make improvements in their workplace.

Topics

Depending on the participants' backgrounds and interests, a selection of topics will be made:

Principles and Practices: test driven design, defect prevention, requirements management, refactoring, design patterns, planning, tracking, project evaluation (retrospectives), process customization, scaling agile.

How to get started with Agile Software Development: Which practices or process is appropriate for my environment? How does agile compare with other software development approaches? Agile experience reports.

The topics will be covered using diverse formats like presentations, games, interactive demonstrations, and exercises.

The course is led by a number of experienced agile software development coaches and session organizers: Marc Evers, Nynke Fokma, Pascal Van Cauwenberghe, Peter Schrier, Rob Westgeest, Vera Peeters, and Willem van den Ende.

Purpose

First of all, bear in mind that each WikiWeb has a purpose.

In this case it is to host issues relating to the XP Day conference and Agile Systems vzw.

Using HTML

The WikiWeb can accept most of the common HTML tags as part of the WikiTextFormattingRules.

However, try not to use too much HTML since this will make pages difficult to edit.

Use of the HTML heading tags is a good idea and, for consistency,

I would suggest making H2 the top-level heading within a page (one can consider the page title as being an effective H1 heading).

You can copy and paste to and from a text editing tool. This makes editing large texts easier.

Courtesy

Remember: you are sharing this space with your colleagues. Do not delete or distort what others have written. Write in a factual, clear style. Don't insult or defame others (do that face-to-face, if necessary :-) ).

Finally, if you write in the first person then be sure to SignYourNames after your piece.

Further Wiki style tips

If you like, you can also read WardCunningham's original tips on good Wiki style: wiki:GoodStyle

WikiTextFormattingRules

When you click on Edit this Page in the navigation area at the bottom of any WikiWeb page you are brought into a text editor for editing the contents of the topic.

Most text that you type is just word wrapped and appears as you enter it. A number of simple formatting options are available:

	Blank lines create new paragraphs.
	_text_ gives italics.
	*text* gives bold.
--- or more dashes inserts a horizontal separator.

You can create indented paragraphs and list using multiples of 3 spaces or the TAB key as follows. Note that in some browsers Ctrl-I can be used in place of a TAB.

	<3 spaces>* gives a list item.
<3 spaces>9 (or any number) gives a numbered list item.
<6 spaces>* gives an indented list.

Note that when you save a page, TAB characters are automatically converted to multiple spaces.

Internal Links

You can create an internal link to another page in this web simply by typing a WikiName. If the linked page does not yet exist then it will be displayed followed by a ?. Click on the ? to define and edit the new page.

If you want to create a link with a name that does not conform to the WikiName format, enclose it in percent signs.

HTML tags

In addition to all this you should find that most HTML tags will work as expected. However, you are not encouraged to make your pages too pretty. Remember, it is the content that matters and the text for your page must remain easy for others to edit.

External Links

There are a variety of way to create external links.

http://	is linked automagically.
https:// is linked automagically.
news://	is linked automagically.
ftp:// is linked automagically.
gopher:// is linked automagically.
mailto:	is linked automagically.

Links to .jpg, .jpeg and .gif files are treated as images to be displayed within the page itself.

External Link References

Sometimes it is useful to be able to link to external pages without the full URL appearing inline in the text. To do this you can create a numerical reference by placing [nn] as a place marker for the link. Then, somewhere else in the document (usually at the bottom), define the link using [nn: some full URL]. For example:

You may like to visit the Object Arts[1] site. They wrote the code for this wiki.

You can see how this is defined by editing the text of this page.

[1: http://www.object-arts.com]
